MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

TRAVEL ADVISORY

25 AUGUST 2023 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently advises against non-Schengen citizens, non-EU citizens and Serbian nationals travelling to Liberland due to increased scrutiny by the Croatian border police.

Non-Schengen Area citizens, non-EU citizens, and Serbian nationals are currently advised not to travel to Liberland via Croatia due to increased scrutiny by border police*.*** Non-Schengen and non-EU citizens—including British and US citizens—who do decide to come to Croatia do so at their own risk. Those who do must register their domicile with the foreigners desk at the local police station if the hotel, inn, BnB or other accommodation does not do it for you. You may consult this guide for more information on the registration process and finding the correct police station.

All visits to Liberland should be planned carefully and in advance. We kindly ask visitors for their own safety to use daytime hours for visiting. Current access to Liberland is possible by land traffic on foot or on bicycle at the entry point near the town of Zmajevac and by river from the port of Batina.

<aside> 💡 Inform us of your plans to visit. Before your visit, please provide us with your full name, the number of your passport, your current residence address, and the date and time of your arrival on border.liberland.org.

Travellers are advised to avoid the Batina and Bogojevo border crossings from Serbia into Croatia due to increased scrutiny by the Croatian border police at these crossings.

The procedure to legally enter and leave Liberland involves a police check performed by Croatian border police. Be prepared to present your ID documents multiple times during your visit. Extra security measures, such as security checks and increased levels of police presence and surveillance, are common here. The border area is a sensitive area and the job of the border police is to provide border security and if our travellers are perceived to obstruct that mission, they may be subject to detention.

You are strongly advised to comply with all police requests to present your documentation. Do not engage in arguments or debates with police officers about policy or borders. Refusal to show ID risks detainment and possible arrest and unfair criminal charges without real recourse. Liberland visitors travelling through Croatia may be subjected to interrogations, searches and detention without fair and transparent treatment under the law.

Absolutely no contraband is allowed. Do not bring any kind of illegal drugs, weapons, or other materials prohibited under Croatian law. Visitors who cross through another country must comply with that country’s laws. Do not consume drugs in Croatia or in Liberland or prior to arriving in Croatia or Liberland. A positive drug test, even if the drug was legal elsewhere, can lead to immediate detention, fines, deportation, and/or a ban from re-entering Croatia. Croatian authorities may compel cooperation with blood, urine or hair testing. Penalties for drug offences may exceed penalties imposed elsewhere.

Travellers are advised not to get a Liberland stamp in their regular home country passports. Travellers having Liberland stamps in their passports have resulted in extra scrutiny and harassment at border crossings, even while exiting.

Visitors should be physically fit and able to function in outdoor and wilderness conditions. It is not advised to bring families with young children or persons with special needs at this time. Visitors are expected to be self-sufficient and bring sufficient food and water to sustain themselves during their stay.
